Worker’s Compensation Poster Required
Business owners are required to abide by the California Labor Code. Part of the California Labor Code is to purchase worker’s compensation insurance if you have at least one person working for you. You can also purchase insurance for yourself, but it is mainly required for at least one employee. Worker’s compensation insurance is not regulated. This means you have options as far as payment plans go when seeking an insurance plan. However, it is another expense on top of the other major expenses to get your business up and running. In a fantasy world, you would have enough money to keep up with all the regulations. But, we know that sometimes you don’t have all the capital. Sometimes businesses have to make choices in order to stay in business. Sometimes those choices mean that you have to fail to adhere to some employee labor code requirements.
If you cannot afford the worker’s compensation insurance, you are not alone. After a small survey of around 900 business owners, 26% admitted that they do not have worker’s compensation insurance. Even worse, 30% were unsure if they had worker’s compensation insurance. It is required that every business owner has workers’ compensation insurance. Once the business acquires the insurance they must post, somewhere visible in their place of business, a poster letting employees know their insurance options. Failing to post the poser is a misdemeanor and can result in a civil penalty of up to $7,000 per violation. For a poster! Imagine the fees and fines associated with being caught without insurance? Imagine the thousands of dollars it will take to get your business up to code and back in order?
